In an unexpected turn of events leading up to the FIFA World Cup, Mexico has stepped up to host Iran’s national football team after the United States reportedly declined to allow the team to stay in the country. This decision comes despite Iran’s group-stage matches being scheduled to take place within the United States. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that FIFA reached out to Mexico for assistance after U.S. authorities refused to accommodate the Iranian squad overnight.
Iran will now set up its training base in Tijuana, Mexico, which is strategically located near the U.S. border and close to San Diego, California. This change was confirmed by FIFA when the official list of team base camp locations was released for the tournament. Initially, Iran had planned to establish its base in Tucson, Arizona, but increasing tensions in the Middle East and complications tied to U.S. sanctions on Iran reportedly made this arrangement unfeasible.
President Sheinbaum expressed Mexico’s willingness to welcome the Iranian team and mentioned that they are currently working with FIFA to iron out the logistical details necessary for the team’s stay. Meanwhile, Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iran Football Federation, noted that relocating to Tijuana would help the team sidestep potential visa issues. He also mentioned that the team could fly directly to Mexico on Iran Air flights, streamlining their travel plans.
The U.S. State Department, while commenting on the situation, affirmed that Iran is indeed welcome to participate in the World Cup. However, they did not provide an explanation as to why the Iranian team was not allowed to stay in the U.S. during the tournament. This development highlights the geopolitical undercurrents that sometimes accompany international sporting events.
The FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place from June 11 to July 19, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Despite the challenges, cooperation between the host nations ensures that all participating teams, including Iran, have adequate facilities and arrangements for the duration of the tournament.
