At Last! Instagram Is Testing a Floating Video Player for Reels

The feature many have been waiting for is finally in the works at Instagram. The company is testing a floating video player, also known as Picture-in-Picture (PiP), for Reels. This will allow users to keep a video playing on screen while they use other applications on their device.
For years, users have wondered why a platform so focused on video lacked this basic multitasking feature. Now, Instagram is catching up to competitors like YouTube and TikTok. During the test, a select group of users will see their Reels minimize into a small, movable window when they switch apps, enabling uninterrupted viewing.
This is a strategic move to boost video metrics. The longer a video plays, the more valuable it is to both the platform and its creators. By removing a key reason for viewers to stop watching—the need to do something else—Instagram is aiming for higher watch times across the board. The feature will also come with a simple off switch.
This welcome addition comes at the same time as another long-overdue update: a native Instagram app for the iPad. The new app promises a vastly improved experience for tablet users, with an interface designed specifically for larger screens.
