ChatGPT Mac Desktop App Drops Voice Feature Mid-January

A significant feature is being removed from ChatGPT on Mac. Voice conversation capabilities in the macOS desktop application will cease operation on January 15, 2026. OpenAI announced this change as part of its strategy to develop more unified voice experiences across different platforms.
Voice functionality isn’t disappearing entirely for Mac users. The feature remains available through the web-based ChatGPT interface, accessible via any browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android. Windows desktop users also retain their voice access. The removal specifically targets only the Mac desktop application.
The company hasn’t provided detailed technical explanations for singling out Mac. However, the emphasis on unified experiences implies the Mac app’s current voice architecture may not be compatible with planned developments. Voice interaction is gaining importance across the AI industry, particularly as companies develop new products and explore deeper integrations.
This change affects users in different ways. Those using voice for accessibility accommodations, professionals with hands-free workflows, or individuals preferring verbal over written communication will all face challenges. Alternative access methods exist but may not replicate the desktop app experience.
Most industry analysts see this as a developmental pause. OpenAI’s substantial commitment to voice technology suggests Mac users will eventually see voice return in an improved form. The temporary discontinuation likely facilitates infrastructure improvements that the existing Mac app cannot support.
