With Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay involved, the deal promises increased access to European markets but simultaneously exposes these countries to heightened competition from European goods. Industries that have historically thrived under the protection of local policies are now bracing for a surge of European products entering their domestic markets.
Particularly anxious are producers of commodities like wine, cheese, honey, and chocolate, who fear the influx of established European brands. Premium cheese producers are especially worried about the challenge posed by well-known European labels. Additionally, new regulations concerning geographical indications will limit the use of certain European names for products made outside Europe, although some existing producers might receive exceptions to continue using such names.
Proponents of the trade agreement highlight its potential to bring about significant advantages, believing that the economic benefits could surpass the difficulties. They argue that the deal will facilitate increased trade and investment, potentially boosting Mercosur’s standing in the global market while fostering closer ties among its member nations. Moreover, this agreement could pave the way for Mercosur to secure further trade partnerships with countries like Canada, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates.
However, critics express concerns that the agreement might exacerbate the region’s reliance on exporting raw materials, disproportionately favoring large agricultural and industrial enterprises over smaller producers.
