Middle East Tensions Push Brent Crude to Highest Level in Five Months

Global oil prices have surged, with Brent crude reaching its highest level in over five months due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The recent Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia have sparked fears of potential disruptions to energy supplies, leading to a rise in market concerns about the stability of the region.

Brent crude futures increased by 0.7%, reaching $113.96 per barrel after peaking at $114.72, a level not seen since May 4. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also saw an uptick, climbing 1.1% to $100.57 per barrel. Brent is on course to achieve a third consecutive weekly gain of nearly 4%, whereas WTI is expected to experience a weekly decline of around 0.8%.

The tensions have intensified following reports that Saudi Aramco, the state oil giant, evacuated its headquarters in Dhahran amid escalated conflict involving Saudi Arabia and the Yemen-based Houthi forces. Analysts caution that additional attacks could further threaten oil shipments, exacerbating supply shortages, and contributing to volatile oil flows and elevated freight costs.

Concerns are also growing over the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial shipping route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Any prolonged disturbances could significantly hinder energy deliveries, keeping oil prices elevated.

Adding to the supply worries, Libya has encountered production issues after the shutdown of a pipeline valve connecting the Hamada and Tahara oilfields to the Zawiya port, reducing output at both sites.

In contrast, a Malta-flagged tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian diesel is en route to New York, following Russia’s decision to resume diesel exports to global markets, including the United States, in a bid to alleviate fuel-price pressures.

As developments in the Middle East continue to unfold, the oil markets remain highly sensitive to changes in the region’s geopolitical landscape, potential shipping disruptions, and the timeline required to restore affected energy operations.
