Long-Range Drone Deployment Allegations Dominate Diplomatic Discourse

Allegations about long-range drone deployment have come to dominate diplomatic discourse between Russia and Ukraine, threatening to derail peace initiatives. Russian authorities claim Ukraine launched 91 such drones at President Putin’s residence, while Ukrainian leadership rejects these accusations as manufactured propaganda.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov provided specific details about what Moscow describes as a coordinated Ukrainian operation targeting the presidential compound in Novgorod region over December 28-29. He characterized the alleged attack as state terrorism and confirmed that while Russian air defenses successfully intercepted all threats, Moscow would implement military countermeasures. Lavrov indicated that the incident would influence Russia’s negotiating position.
President Zelensky categorically denied Russian allegations, suggesting that Moscow was creating false justification for strikes on Ukrainian government buildings in Kyiv. He argued that Russia was following a predictable pattern of manufacturing accusations to provide cover for planned aggression while undermining diplomatic progress. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine’s approach consistently supports peace initiatives rather than jeopardizing them.
According to Russian accounts, air defense networks eliminated every incoming drone, preventing any damage to the presidential property. However, Lavrov maintained that the attack attempt itself—regardless of its failure—constituted grounds for significant retaliation. He confirmed that Russian military leadership had prepared response options and identified specific targets for potential strikes.
Zelensky appealed to international observers to recognize Russian manipulation tactics and speak out rather than remaining passive. He specifically mentioned work with Trump administration representatives as potentially threatened by Russian claims. The Ukrainian president referenced Moscow’s history of attacking major Ukrainian government facilities as evidence that Russia regularly commits actions it accuses Ukraine of undertaking. He stressed that preventing Russian disruption of peace processes requires consistent global attention and active engagement, warning that silence effectively enables Moscow to continue using manufactured crises to shift blame.
