US Sanctions Target Cuban Leadership, Impacting Economic and Business Ties

The United States has rolled out a fresh wave of economic sanctions aimed at top Cuban officials, including President Miguel Díaz-Canel, his family, and members of the Castro family, as part of an intensified effort to pressure the Cuban regime. These sanctions also extend to Cuban military and state-associated entities like the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and several related organizations. The move marks a continuation of the US strategy to apply economic and diplomatic strain on Cuba.

As part of the sanctions, individuals linked to former President Raúl Castro, who remains a key political figure in Cuba despite not holding an official government position, are also targeted. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that entities providing support or services to those sanctioned, including foreign banks and international corporations, could face repercussions. This development is indicative of the ongoing tensions between Washington and Havana.

These new measures come amid a backdrop of longstanding US economic embargoes on Cuba. Relations have soured further in recent years, with US authorities accusing the Cuban government of political oppression and meddling in regional affairs. Conversely, Cuban officials have continually criticized US sanctions, attributing the island’s economic hardships to these restrictions.

The latest sanctions are a component of a broader US policy under President Donald Trump, designed to ramp up economic and political pressure not only on Cuba but also on other nations in the region. The ongoing strategy reflects a significant shift in US-Cuban relations, highlighting the deepening discord between the two nations.
