Green Pea Hummus: Market Potential in Protein and Fiber-Rich Food Sector

If you’re on the lookout for a simple way to boost the protein and fibre content of your meals, green pea hummus might be just what you need. This homemade spread is a blend of boiled chickpeas and green peas, enhanced with a mix of herbs, spices, and healthy fats. Not only does it offer a protein punch of about 12–13 grams per serving, but it also enriches your diet with essential vitamins and minerals. Its creamy consistency makes it a versatile substitute for traditional condiments like ketchup or mayonnaise, and it pairs well with a variety of foods, from sandwiches and wraps to dosa and paratha.

The recipe for green pea hummus is straightforward. Begin by gathering the following ingredients: one cup each of boiled chickpeas and steamed green peas, a tablespoon of sesame seeds, a handful of both coriander and mint leaves, one to two green chillies, a clove of garlic, half a teaspoon of cumin powder, salt to taste, the juice of half a lemon, a tablespoon of olive oil, and two to three ice cubes. The preparation starts by steaming the green peas for about 7–8 minutes until they become tender.

Once the peas are ready, place them in a blender along with the boiled chickpeas, coriander, mint, sesame seeds, green chillies, garlic, cumin powder, salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and ice cubes. Blend the mixture until it reaches a smooth and creamy consistency. If the hummus appears too thick, simply add a bit of water and blend again. After achieving the desired texture, transfer the hummus to a serving bowl. For a finishing touch, drizzle a little olive oil on top and garnish with red chilli powder, pomegranate seeds, or a few whole chickpeas.

Green pea hummus is not only nutritious but also incredibly versatile. Use it as a spread or dip to elevate your everyday meals. It complements sandwiches, wraps, frankies, dosa, and parathas beautifully, and serves as a delightful dip for fresh vegetables. While green peas are not a complete protein source due to their lower levels of some essential amino acids, pairing them with other protein-rich foods can help maintain a well-rounded diet.

This recipe offers a delicious and easy way to integrate more nutrients into your daily meals without the sense of adhering to a restrictive “healthy eating” plan. By incorporating green pea hummus, you can enhance the nutritional profile of your food while enjoying a tasty and satisfying addition to your culinary repertoire.
