Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexican law enforcement has reported numerous achievements, including the arrest of tens of thousands of suspects, substantial seizures of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of thousands of hidden drug labs. The transfer of high-profile criminal suspects to the US has been expedited, and officials have observed a notable decrease in fentanyl trafficking. This period of cooperation contrasts sharply with the López Obrador administration, which had taken steps that complicated bilateral security efforts. Notably, López Obrador’s government had shuttered a US intelligence unit in Mexico and enforced stricter regulations on foreign security agents. The arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos in 2020 further strained relations, as did disagreements over organized crime investigations.
In 2024, tensions escalated further when allegations surfaced about drug-trafficking money being linked to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these allegations did not lead to formal charges, they contributed to the erosion of trust between the Mexican government and US authorities.
