This directive was announced during a cabinet meeting held in Barranquilla, where the president emphasized the need for a coordinated effort between police and migration authorities, with operations expected to commence this week. The president stated that the primary focus of these operations would be on migrants engaged in criminal acts, followed by those who have not yet regularized their immigration status.
Alongside immigration measures, President de la Espriella declared a tougher stance against criminal organizations involved in activities such as drug trafficking, illegal mining, extortion, and smuggling. He labeled these groups as terrorists, signaling a stringent approach to their eradication under his administration.
The president’s strategy on immigration has sparked criticism from opposition figures and human rights advocates. Concerns are being raised that the policy might undermine Colombia’s previous supportive stance towards migrants, notably those fleeing from Venezuela.
