At the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco reaffirmed Mexico’s dedication to national sovereignty and international collaboration. Standing in for President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco emphasized Mexico’s balance between maintaining its sovereignty and actively cooperating with global partners.
In his speech, Velasco stressed Mexico’s policy of non-intervention and its commitment to engaging in international cooperation without compromising its autonomy. He highlighted the nation’s social policies, initiatives in poverty reduction, and a reported decline in homicide rates as part of Mexico’s broader assertion that sustainable peace is rooted in social development and the respect for nations’ territorial integrity and self-determination.
Addressing the situation in the Middle East, Velasco reiterated Mexico’s support for a two-state solution, affirming Palestine’s right to exist within secure and recognized borders. He also called for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba, emphasizing Mexico’s ongoing provision of humanitarian aid to the country.
During the assembly, Velasco engaged in bilateral meetings with representatives from countries such as Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru. Discussions with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares focused on enhancing bilateral relations and preparing for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.
With Peru, talks centered on reopening embassies following the restoration of diplomatic relations. Both nations expressed a commitment to dialogue and mutual respect. Other meetings included discussions on economic cooperation, strategic investments, UN reform, trade relations, and efforts to fortify multilateral institutions.
