The European Union has mandated changes for Google, pressing the tech giant to enhance accessibility to its Android platform and search services. This move comes under a fresh set of regulations aimed at boosting competition within the digital marketplace. According to these new directives, Google is required to provide 11 of its Android features to other artificial intelligence developers. This will enable rival AI assistants to utilize crucial device functions and respond to voice commands in a manner akin to Google’s own Gemini assistant. Users can expect these updates with a forthcoming Android release slated for July 2027.
Additionally, the regulations obligate Google to share certain anonymized search data with AI companies and other search service competitors. This measure is intended to aid these companies in enhancing their search-based offerings. However, before sharing this data, Google is permitted to evaluate if the requesting companies adhere to cybersecurity and data protection standards. This particular requirement is set to come into force starting January of the next year.
The European Commission has emphasized that these measures incorporate safeguards designed to maintain user privacy and device security while simultaneously fostering increased competition in the realms of AI and online search services.
Google has expressed criticism towards this ruling, contending that such changes might undermine the privacy and security protections for users, despite the company’s attempts to address the regulatory body’s concerns.
