Mexico Demands Probes on Economic Impact of Migrant Deaths in US Operations

In a significant diplomatic move, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has declared that her government will formally urge the United States to initiate criminal investigations into the deaths of Mexican migrants in U.S. immigration detention centers and during enforcement operations. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, in Houston, which occurred during an immigration operation. The incident has been described by Mexican officials as highly concerning, prompting them to demand accountability for such actions.

Since the latest wave of U.S. immigration enforcement began, a total of 17 Mexican citizens have lost their lives, according to data provided by the Mexican government. Out of these, 14 died while in detention, and three were killed during enforcement activities. This alarming statistic has intensified the Mexican government’s resolve to seek justice for its citizens and ensure their rights are safeguarded. In pursuit of these objectives, Mexico plans to submit formal requests to various U.S. federal and state authorities, including the Department of Justice, advocating for criminal proceedings where deemed appropriate.

President Sheinbaum emphasized that the initiative is not only a step toward achieving justice for Mexican nationals but also a critical measure to uphold their rights without disrupting the diplomatic ties between the two neighboring countries. The Mexican government is keen on maintaining a collaborative relationship with the United States while addressing these pressing human rights concerns.

This development surfaces amidst ongoing tensions between Mexico and the U.S. regarding immigration policies and broader bilateral security matters. The actions taken by the Mexican government highlight the complexities and challenges inherent in managing immigration issues along the shared border and reflect a growing demand for accountability and reform in the handling of migrant cases.
